The dirigible "Italia" flown by General Nobile crashed on its way to the North Pole in 1928. Half the crew were catapulted to the ice while the remainder were still aboard the Italia as it disappeared. The SOS sent by the men marooned on ice caused the largest land-sea-air rescue attempt ever undertaken.
