"Pirates of the Canyon" was created for spectators, pilots and crews. Palo Duro Canyon, the second largest canyon on the continent, is generally restricted from aircraft which makes this event a very unique experience. Park Rangers open the state park for this rare treat to combine the beautiful colors of hot air balloons with the majestic backdrop of the canyon. This is how we all become pirates. We set our giant sails in the center of the open canyon and drift slowly, stealing the sights and forever holding them as our own treasures.
Over the past six years, Pirates has grown considerably. We started out with only six balloons and have rapidly grown to thirty. Thanks to the Amarillo and Canyon public, Pirates of the Canyon will continue to grow in the years to come.
I would like to personally thank the Pirate volunteers and all of the people involved in helping with this event. The rally would not have been possible without each and every one of their dedicated service to this rally.
Thank you for joining us during this spectacular event.
