Welcome to the US National Hot Air Balloon Championship Daily's I will try to keep this updated after each flight Leaving the 16th to go to Atlanta GA. Going to go to Atlanta to pick up the balloon I will be flying in the nationals. It is a 90 thousand Cu Ft balloon. I know it is a little bit large for competition but it will have to do. Most of the other pilots will be flying balloons that are between 54 thousand cu ft and 77 thousand cu ft. I will stay the night in Atlanta and finish the trip to Anderson in the morning on Monday. Preparations Here are a few of the things I have been working on to prepare. Marking a map with targets (492 to be exact) First I have to cut the map into 24 page size pieces. Next is to mark all the targets on each of the 24 pages. Targets are most often the intersection of two roads. This allows the scorekeepers (Observers) to find a specific spot to measure your baggie drop for a score. Next is going to the print shop to make copies. I am making three sets of this map. One for me one for my brother Jon and one for my Father. Next is Laminating the 24 pages and then taping them back together into one map. I will also be creating a Map Board. During your flight you must have a place to work. Many times the targets will change during the flight since the wind is changing and quite often you must pick different targets while you’re flying. If you have a map board it is like having a Desk to work on while you’re flying. Of course you have to have a spot to put your baggies. You may have to drop several markers (Baggies) during each flight. Markers must be dropped in order on the targets. You can not drop a yellow marker on the first target if that target has been designated as a blue marker drop. So keeping your baggies in order is a must. I have built an entire new inflation fan. You simply must have everything work perfect. Having a new fan just gives you one less thing to worry about at the launch site. Arriving in Anderson Monday July 17th First day in town I have about 30 targets to visit. My niece Hailey and I have spent over two weeks preparing the maps with all the potential targets we may use in the area for competition. Out of over 500 targets we have only about 30 that we are unsure of or need to be clarified by actually visiting the site of the target. So I will spend most of Monday running around the city visiting potential target locations. Click here to see the competition Map Day One! We are in Town!! Well, Mike and I got to town about 945 am today. Plenty of time for him to get checked into his room and me to go check out a few targets and get my stuff organized. To my surprise there were already twelve balloons in town. They have made a flight that morning already. Drinks are served All the Electronics Mom is in the house! Basket at the hotel. TA Ready to Go. After a few hours of running around looking at targets I came back to the hotel to get checked in. And of course set up the margarita machine... I unloaded all the gear and set up my recharging station on the table. Put my clothes away and got settled into my room. Mike went to his Observer Briefing, This is a training class for the score keepers. His training class went on for FIVE and a half hours! They went over all the information needed to score the pilots. Mom and Dad got in around 2:45 with my sister Jule and Nephew Tyler. My sister went straight for the margarita machine! I was able to claim a nice parking spot right in front of my room. Spent a couple of hours down at the briefing room going over the maps and marking all the no-fly zones and power lines on the map. Brother Jon and Niece Hailey showed up about 6pm. Jule was sure happy to see her little girl for the first time in a couple of months. We are currently loading up to go and fly. Talk to you all later today. Jeff First Flight. Media Flight Well we had our first run today. It was a flight to a target placed on the runway of the airport. All three pilots made the airport and made drops on the target and then landed together on one of the Taxiways. Great Run! I spent about 15 minutes hovering over the target and then tossed my baggie short of the target. POO! Father came in on the target and looks like he tossed his marker right on the X. there were only two markers on the X when I came past. Jon fell short of the target due to the winds shifting as he came in. Jon still dropped his marker on the runway! Great run by all the TA Pilots. Cant wait for the competition to start. Today's flight was a Media flight. We were taking the local Sponsors and the media, (tv newspaper and county officials) for a flight. I even took the property owners son with me for the flight. Poor Boy.. We pulled in to a farm and ask this young man if we could use his field to launch. He said OK. I asked to you want to go? He said are you kidding? I said NO Come and fly with Team Thompson... He turned off the tractor and came right over. I ask " Shouldn't you tell someone your leaving? A big smile came over his face and he said "Better tell my dad"... Here are the three competitors for Team Thompson. Hear no See no and Speak no. More later. Just a quick update for the late gang. Two Top TEN Thompson's today. Dad and I finished 5th and 8th in this mornings event. Jon is the slacker. Finished in 18th. Off to bed for me. Tomorrow is the first day of competition. GAME ON. Thanks to all who have sent mail and wishes of good luck. Means the world to all of us. Jeff First Flight This flight was a THREE PART flight. We all had a common target to hit then we had to choose two additional fly on targets. These fly on targets had to be Dropping like a rock declared to the scorekeeper before we launched. We had to start a minimum of 2K away from the common target and each of our additional targets had to be 1K beyond the common target. We went out into the area we believed should be a good area to launch and found a shopping center parking lot where there was enough room for us to all three launch and proceeded to get in the air. The launch site was a good one since we all made a great pass at the first target. I was in first and dropped my marker about 200 feet to the left of the target. Dad next followed and dropped his mark on the center of the X and Jon followed with 12ft drop. At our next goal I dropped about 93meters Jon was about 86 meters and dad was right in the road with a 2 to 3 meter drop. About that time the wind began to shift hard left and none of us made a good drop on the last target. I was about 1600 meters away and I am unsure what Dad and Jon did. Results as of the first flight. Jim Thompson 5th place over all. Jon 15th and Jeff 22nd. Wednesday Evening Flight. Originally this flight was suppose to be a two part Pilot Declared Goal. We would all be launching from the same field but were able to pick one target for the First Goal and two targets for our second goal. We had to declare in writing three goals prior to lifting off. One of the three was your first target or goal and the second two had to be three kilometers past the first target. Your first target had to be at least one km past the common launch field. We were all out at the field by 530pm. Everyone was launching Pi-balls and watching them go straight up! I mean STRAIGHT UP 4,000 ft. At 6pm a meeting was called and the evening task was officially put on hold. Another briefing would be held at 6:30 to determine what if any tasks would be called. about 6:05 the wind began to blow. And blow. By 6:30 a decision was made to run one PDG (pilot declared goal) and each pilot could choose two targets or goals. Off to the races we went. The yellow flag went up immediately. (5 min warning to the opening of the launch TA2 & TA3 launching on Wed Eve window). Everyone was scrambling to get the balloons airborne before the wind would quit altogether. Team Thompson all chose the same two targets and I took off first. The above photo was taken as I launched from the field. I climbed steady up to about 2400 feet before I found any stable wind layers and only barely to the right of my right most goal. I was tempted to drop back down to the deck to try to use some left and go to my left goal but chose to stick it out up high. You can find your target better from up high. Dad followed next and Jon (TA3) took up the rear. As we flew we found winds of 14 to 18 mph and I was going to be at my goal in about 9 minutes. No time to change my mind so just held my flight level and looked for my target intersection. After about 4 minutes that felt like two hours I spotted the intersection that I had chosen as my right target. I got a compass reading on it and was heading just to the right of it. I held my altitude until I was just about on top of it and then began a very aggressive decent. Dropped my marker from about 1200 feet. Watched my marker fly right at the center of the intersection and then over it and then over the house and finally coming to rest in the back yard of the home on the corner. Should have thrown earlier. Final mark was 93meters from the intersection. Not to bad for an evening flight. Turned around to see Jon going in for a drop. Dad had lowered his altitude looking for a left to go to target two. (the left most of our choices) and found that he could not hold left and then came back up for more right. Dad and I eventually landed together. Current standings. Dad dropped from 5th to 9th. Jon went from 15th to 17th and I went from 22nd to 19th. More to come. Day Two Thursday Thursday Am Flight. OK We are now into day two. Things are starting to get a little tense. The tasks are getting much harder. Here is a diagram of today's task. Each pilot had to fly into a common goal. Pilots choice of launch spot. Launch had to be 3km from common goal. Each pilot had to choose a goal (PDG) at least three km past the common goal. We were allowed to choose two targets. The target we chose would also be the first leg of an elbow. An elbow is where you try to fly back the way you came. This makes your choice of PDG very important since it will be the starting point of your Elbow. We all came in on the first target flying side by side. Tree topping for left. Got to the field and I actually had to drop my marker around Jon. Jon waited a little longer and dropped right on the X. Dad was further off but in the target field. Then it was climb climb climb to find the layer to take us to the furthest right of our two chosen pilot declared goals. As we were about half way to the PDG the radio went blank. We could not talk to anyone nor could we talk to each other. Someone was jamming the frequency. The radio signal was so powerful we could not even talk over it between each other in the balloons. Come to find out that my sister had put the microphone in the cup holder in the van depressing the talk button. This went on for almost 30 minutes. I turned on my backup handheld radio and switched it to channel two. After a short while Jon came on the radio and said "TA1 are you on two?" It did not take long before Jon's wife Sandy figured it out and we were able to get her to flag down my sister and clear the radio. We all came in on the pilot declared target and made great drops. I dropped my marker at the feet of my ground crew sitting just outside the van next to the intersection that was my target. Jon was just north and father was just south of the target. Now it was hug the tree time. We had to get as far left as we could before the left quit. We spent about 35 minutes just going from tree to tree getting as low as we could without touching anything and getting disqualified. We had to get three km away from the PGD before we could drop our center marker of our three that made up the elbow. We all three dropped our markers in a little subdivision just north of the airport. As soon as we made our drops it was CLIMB CLIMB CLIMB. Up to 4450 ft to go as much to the northeast as we could. We found a nice layer there on a heading of 040 degrees. We hung out in this layer for another 35 to 40 minutes to get our 3KM distance from the previous marker then we all dropped like rocks. We had been in the air for over two hours and needed to be on the ground. The problem was that as you descend you begin to go backwards toward your previous marker but you don't want to drop from too high or you will never find the marker and not get any score at all. A Zero score here will kill you! I was able to spot a subdivision being built with only roads and no homes. Dad was able to spot a warehouse area and drop safe in there. Jon was forced to drop into an area of homes. We all landed and the crews were there to pick us up right away. We all went back to get our last markers scored and were all happy happy. We found my marker and scored it and got on the radio to let TA2 and TA3 know we were heading back to drop off our score keeper. Mother came on the radio and told us that Jon has not found his last marker and needed our help to search. So all three teams with crew and scorekeepers headed over to the neighborhood where Jon thought is marker had fallen. We had a 6 block area to search and all took off in search looking on rooftops and backyards and anywhere we could. We had been looking for almost 45 minutes and hope was getting thin when Jon came on the radio and said "Looks like I am buying my wife dinner! We found it, but we have a problem it is up in a tree! The marker had gotten caught in the top of a tree. A BIG TREE! The marker was more than 85 feet in the air! No way to climb up and worried about getting penalty points for loosing a marker we were all in poor spirits. We even tried throwing small apples at it to knock it down but it was soooo high up in the tree that we could not even throw an apple that high! After several phone calls to the scoring officials we determined that it was not a lost marker but just an unrecoverable marker. We scored the drop as if it had fallen to the ground. We just found out a few minutes ago that JON WON the elbow part of the flight.! Father finished 3rd and I took 4th. Three of the top 4 were TEAM THOMPSON!! On the three tasks this morning here are the results. Dad. 15th 25th and 3rd Jon 8th 27th and 1st Jeff 16th 13th and 4th. Yes the TA TEAM Smoked the elbow placing 1st 3rd and 4th!!! The current standings for the overall Jim Thompson 11th Jon Thompson 13th and Jeff Thompson 16th Thursday EVENING flight. Cancelled due to Thunderstorms. Time to hit the margarita machine. DAY 3 Friday AM Well the morning started early as usual. I was up by 3:40am without an alarm. We had all gotten a good night sleep with the cancellation of last nights flight. We have looked ahead at the weather and things do not look real good for tonight or Saturday so we were all wondering what tasks awaited us. When we got into the pilot briefing room we found 5 markers on the table for each pilot. It was going to be a busy morning!! We had a Pilot Declared Goal then a Fly In to a Gordon Bennit then a Hesitation Waltz with Two Judge Declared goals then two Pilot declared goals after that! This is going to take a little planning. First thing was to determine where would be a good Pilot Declared Goal on the way into the Airport where the Gordon Bennit task would be. We had to pick a target at least two kilometers away from the airport then pick a launch site that was 1km away from that. We found several targets that would fit the bill and we all loaded up and headed out for what was going to be a long and VERY busy flight. Above is TA2 and TA3 launching. No sooner than I had gotten in the air my sister calls on the radio debating my target numbers. She was telling me that the numbers I had given were for a different intersection that what the observer had on her map. FRANTIC! I went to work on my map as the UTM grid numbers I had declared were read back to me over the radio. Then I realized I could care less what is on the observers map. My map my numbers are right! We spent weeks making sure! I did the calculations to double check just in case and my UTM Grid numbers were right and my target ID number was the correct intersection I had chosen. I thanked my sister for the panic attack and for taking my mind off actually flying the balloon for a bit. We had a real slow 025 to 040 on the surface and up to about 800ft. Then it went right to 065 and started to pick up speed to around 9 to 12 knots. At about 1300 it went left to 035 and increased speed to 24 knots. We had to climb over 2400 before it started to come back to the right and we found a layer at 2650 going 28 knots at 089 degrees. Let me tell you when your scooting along at 28 kts that 1km to the first target goes by in just a few minutes. No time to be debating targets sis!! I was coming in on the first target real fast and trying to get the balloon to drop as fast as I could and sliding off to the right in a hurry. Took it down all the way to the ground to try to work some left back to the intersection. This first goal was a gravity drop. You could not throw the marker you just had to lay it over the side and let go! I placed the baggie over the edge and held onto it with my left hand flying the balloon with my right hand. I had two large trees I had to clear just before I got to the intersection and just as I started to go over the trees I let the marker slip out of my hand. I could not feel the tail thru my gloves and it just slipped out. Worse yet it got caught in the top of the TREE! I was sooooo mad! Fortunately the tree was just off to the side of the road so the difference was only a few feet! Now it was time to climb and get into that 090 layer to get to the airport and make a run on the Gordon Bennit Task. At 2600 the speed was around 28 to 30 knots so the 2km to the airport would only take about 10 minutes. Now keep in mind I am flying in a 90,000 cu/ft balloon alone. Once again I had a hard time getting it to drop so I did not get far enough right before I had to start making a decent. Came in lined up good on the target but started slipping over to the left this time. The way a Gordon Bennit works is that you have an X on the field and there is an area where you can not drop surrounding the X. You need to drop your marker as close to the X as you can without entering the buffer zone around the X. UNLESS you think you can drop your marker directly on the actual fabric that makes up the X and then you can drop on the X. I was down the runway about 100 feet from the X and 60 feet outside the buffer zone. This goal was also a Gravity Drop. You could not throw the marker you just had to drop it. YES I held onto it this time! Now it is time to Climb again and go for the next task the Hesitation Waltz. This is a JDG or Judge Declared goal where you have the choice of TWO targets. You have to choose the one you think you can get to. On the way to this target you must choose two PDG's (Pilot Declared Goals) and right the UTM coordinates on the tail of the marker you will drop at your chosen JDG. To add a little more stress to this process I had to wait till Jon and Dad to clear the airport to confirm on what targets we wanted to choose for our first set of PDG's. So now I am flying along again trying to get more right and doing my map work to choose two more targets beyond the next JDG that I am approaching at 24knots. I drop down with a good line on the target and start slipping left. Too late for me to go back up and correct so I just find as much right as I can and head for the last of my JDG goals and the last of the Gravity Drops. Thank Goodness!! I ended up just across the street from the target which was placed in a soccer field. Dropped my marker at the feet of my chase team and started to climb. As you can see from the photo I was not that far away from the target. I was able to watch my father make a great run on the target right up until he bumped another balloon right over the target and he bounced away from it. I think he still got 8th place and I got 16th. Now it is climb again to head to our first Pilot Declared Goal. With Dad beside me and Jon not to far behind we had a short 3km to the next target. We chose a target that we had not seen before so the search on the horizon to find the location was difficult. Once I had the target located I realized we were not going to see it until we were right on top of it. We had a large batch of trees and some big apartment buildings in front of the intersection. We all made great approaches and great drops. All three TA Team Captains made top ten drops on this target. Now for the 5th and final time it was CLIMB CLIMB CLIMB to get to the last target. We had chosen a target that was only 1.4km from our last goal and that was just a little too close! The wind at 26knots made it a very fast 6 minutes to the last drop. Falling at over 800 FPM I leveled off at around 100 feet and threw my marker as far and hard as I could. In fact I threw over the intersection and to the other side of the road with a 12 foot drop from the center. Now it is time to find a landing spot. Somehow father had gotten in front of me and found a great spot along the grounds of a community golf course so I said what the heck that will work. I lowered my altitude to roof top level and turned nicely right down next to dad. Jon came along in about ten minutes and set his balloon right next to dad on the other side. 14km over 5 targets and a one hour flight and we all land closer together than we started. Overall standing right now. Jim Thompson 15th Jeff Thompson 16th and Jon Thompson 17th. How is that for a tight group? Here is the flight map with targets. First target was target 635. Second was the Gordon Bennit at the airport. Third was the JDG on the soccer field. Fourth was a PDG #206 and our last target #5 was PDG at 8-5. Friday night flight CANCELLED Due to Potential Thunderstorms. Day 4 Sat AM flgiht The morning flight was CANCELLED due to a line of thunderstorms falling apart just north of our area. As it turned out it was a very good call. Sunrise came with a flurry of gusts and low ceilings. So we are cleaning trucks and recharging batteries and more or less recovering. Looks like we may get another flight in tonight!!! I don't know how many of you have been checking the BFA website for the actual points, I am just ONE (1) point behind my father!! So if we get to fly tonight???? Who knows??? Here is the rest of the gang amusing themselves. Sat PM Flight Well, We had another tough and challenging set of tasks tonight. We all started from a CLP (common launch point) and had two tasks. First was a JDG with two options. One to the south and one to the north. The second part of the task was a maximum distance within a scoring area. The object was to fly to the farthest corner of a specific area and drop a marker. To make it just a little more challenging your marker had to be dropped within 25 meters of a road. I took off first and started to climb to find a right turn to head to the southern target and then head to the southern end of the Maximum scoring area. I climbed to almost 4 thousand feet without finding a good right turn to get us to the southern target. There were several small layers going left and right below me but none of them were consistent enough to rely on. I decided that if we had any chance of hitting one of the JDG's it would have to be the northern one. I found a right turn about 5700 feet and began to turn right for the north target. Dad and Jon followed along. About 5800 we found a 124 degree heading. That was enough for us to get to the target but we would be real real high up to drop our markers. The first target was a gravity drop so we would be unable to thow the marker if we were off the target any. I started my drop about a quarter mile out. Falling about 700 FPM I went all the way down and dropped my marker about a block before the target while I was still about 1200 feet up. You know your falling fast when you keep up with your marker for a short while. Father came in on the target and dropped his marker from 4 THOUSAND FEET and lost sight of it before it hit the ground. Jon dropped his and it went off to the south east of the target. Then we all climbed back up into the 124 degree layer at 5800 feet and were trying to get to the southern end of the max distance area. Looking at the GPS we found that we only had 3 degrees to spare for the south end of the area so I decided that it would be better for us to drop back down and head for the northern leg of the area. I radioed Jon and Dad and said lets plug in one of the targets we have in that northern leg and head for that. At the same time we were also watching two thunderstorm cells developing to our south east and one to the north west. Dad radioed to the chase team and had them check with the officials about the weather conditions and if the flight may be aborted. We were given the all clear and continued on. This last drop had to be on or within 25 meters of a road. We all dropped from way up high and dropped markers as we fell. Dad dropped and landed almost immediately. Jon was farther to the east and made a great drop right in the corner of the scoring area. I found a small hay field to set down in but the ground crew had to go find my marker first. The area was congested horribly with traffic from the chase teams and the local residents who came out to chase balloons since it was a Saturday night. I was able to keep the balloon upright and the land owner came out with his kids to see us. He was able to give me directions that I could relay to the chase team so they could get into the field to pick me up. About this time TA2 called on the radio with troubles. Someone had told my mother that all the fields where dad had landed were locked up. We told them as soon as we got packed up we would head that way. As we were packing away the skies started to get real ugly. Just as we were leaving the wind went nuts. 20 to 25 mph. We got a call on the radio from my mother, she had found a landowner who had keys to the gates and would let her in to get dad. Jon was on the ground and his crew was there and packing away. I returned to where I had dropped my marker and we went in and got a score on it and recovered the marker and headed back to the hotel. We then got a call on the radio from TA2 letting us know they had to go back to the first JDG to find dads marker. He had lost track of it on the way down and we needed to find it so he could get a score on it. About then is when the RAIN let loose. Pouring down, we got back to the the north target area and found Mom and Dad out in the woods across the street from the target looking for his marker. Hailey was out in the woods with grandma and we grabbed our flashlights and went out to help. The rain was fairly light by then but the searchers were already soaked. After a while father called off the search. We went back to the hotel and dropped off some of the crew and headed to refuel. It was now nearly 10pm. We left a handheld with one of the crew at the hotel and headed to refuel. They had stopped fueling due to the lightning in the area. They resumed fueling when we got in line. We pulled up to the trucks and the skies opened up again. They stopped fueling right then. There we were Jon and I in our trucks and waiting for the rain to stop. One of the crew called on the radio to inform us that Fathers marker was scored on the field. He had actually hit the scoring field and did not even realize it. All that wandering around in the woods in the rain looking for a lost marker was unnecessary. He had actually hit close enough to the target that the other scoring teams had already marked him and retrieved his marker. Hard to judge where your marker will land when you pitch it out at 4,000 feet. He does this often. I have never seen anyone who can toss a marker out of a balloon that high up in the air and still hit the targets. I have offered to take him with me and let him toss my markers!!! So all of Team Thompson Scored and scored fairly well on the two tasks. OK Here are the results as they were posted Sunday Morning. Jim Thompson TA2 13th place. That is humorous because his banner number was 13. Jeff Thompson is 14th place and that also was my banner number. Jon Thompson TA3 is 15th place and that was also his Banner number!! Sunday morning flight has been cancelled due to poor visibility and thunderstorms in the area. It has been announced that many of the marked drops from the maximum distance drop task needed to be re-measured before they will post the final results. None of us expect our results to change but we will let you know!! O and by the way Dave... Not a mark on your balloon!! Thank you! The Final Results With the re-measure of the last nights distance drops father has moved into 12th place overall. I stayed in 14th and Jon stayed in 15th place. Not a bad finish for Team Thompson. All Three pilots in the top 15 in the country. Left to Right. Jule (sister) Jeff (Me TA1) Mom ( Connie / Sarge) Dad (Jim TA2) Jon (Brother TA3) Sandy (Jon's Wife) Tyler (Jule's Son) In Front: Austin (Jon's Son) Audra (Jon's Daughter) Hailey (Jule's Girl) Thanks to all who made this happen. Thank you to Dave Sullivan who loaned me his baby to fly. Thanks to Bob Willamoski for taking care of my passengers while I was gone. Thanks to all of you who came to my site to keep up to date and follow along with my adventure. Thanks to Jule Ty for being my crew for the week. Thanks to Hailey who worked for hours and hours helping me with the maps and spreadsheets of targets. Thanks to Jon and Sandy for being there with the kids. Thanks to Mike for riding with up and back and taking his time to be an observer for the event. Most of all THANKS MOM & DAD for getting us all together for this incredible family affair. I hope each of you will treasure this event as much as I know I will. I love you all! Jeff Hard to imagine that it was 30 years ago when this gang first went to the national championships! We now have second and third generation of the same family involved in the sport of Ballooning! O by the way.. Yes DAD your the second generation!!!!

11/29/13 The member map is not working correctly. Google has changed the code for thier map program. It is sending us script that we are not programed for. It will take a few weeks to read this code and update the program to work with the new APIv3 version of google maps. Please forgive this temporary outage. Jeff

When I go out to fly in the mornings I look at a bunch of weather stuff. I am trying to build a page on this site that will have all that weather information in one spot. The goal is to have one page that will automatically detect where you are and load all the weather you need in one spot. The trick is getting the information to all load from many different sources onto one page. The other bit of code we need to figure out is how the user can choose their own source. Let me explain how the auto detect works. Say your internet provider is located in a large city like Des Moines Iowa. And you are located in Ankeny Iowa. The auto detect will think you are in Des Moines because that is where your service originates from. So it may not give you the exact weather you want to see. So we must build into the code a way for the user to select their own weather source. Here is a link to the temporary Mock up Weather Page. Well I have outlined what we want for a weather page and have some code writing geeks trying to figure out if we can indeed do what i want to do. If we can it will be a one stop shop for getting a great idea if you are going to get a flight in.

From time to time I bang my head against the desk wondering just what it is I have done. Today is one of those days. Member map is not working and the only way I have found to get it to run is by opening a Firefox browser and clicking on member map. Then when the pop up windows open telling me a script can not run I select do not tell me again and stop script. After three windows have popped up and I have dismissed them the map works? I hope the developer comes up with a fix soon. The Member Map is one of the best features on the site.

The History of Hot Air Ballooning Unmanned hot air balloons are mentioned in Chinese history. Zhuge Liang in the Three Kingdoms era used airborne lanterns for military signaling. These lanterns, known as Kongming lanterns (孔明灯) nowadays, are still being flown in China, despite the risk of causing a fire upon landing. There is also some speculation that hot air balloons were used by the Nazca Indians of Peru some 1500 years ago as a tool for design vast drawings on the Nazca plain. The first clearly recorded instances of balloons capable of carrying passengers used hot air to obtain buoyancy and were built by the brothers Josef and Etienne Montgolfier in Annonay, France. They were from a family of paper manufacturers who had noticed the ash rising in fires. After experimenting with un-crewed balloons and flights with animals, the first balloon flight with humans on board took place on 21 November 1783. King Louis XVI had originally decreed that condemned criminals would be the first pilots, but a young physicist named Pilâtre de Rozier and the Marquis Francois d'Arlandes successfully petitioned for the honor. Hot air balloons were basically paper bags with a smoky fire built on a grill attached to the bottom, so they had a tendency to catch fire and be destroyed on landing. The first hot air balloon flight in the United States took place on January 9, 1793. The 45 minute flight started in Philadelphia and ended in Gloucester County, New Jersey. The flight was witnessed by George Washington. Balloons were the first manifestation of air power. Hot air balloons such as The Enterprise were used by the North for artillery observation in the American Civil War and were used for communication during the Siege of Paris in 1871. They were also used for observation of trench warfare in World War I. However, as the development of balloons that used unheated gases (such as hydrogen) became more refined, hot air for ballooning receded to obscurity for most of the 1800's and the first half of the 1900's. Only with advances in material and fuel technology did hot air ballooning return to the fore. The first modern hot air balloon was designed and built in 1960 by Ed Yost. Yost used a modified propane powered "weed burner" to heat the air and lightweight nylon fabric for the envelope material. He made the first free flight of such an aircraft in Bruning, Nebraska on 22 October 1960. Today, hot air balloons are used for pleasure, sport and rides for hire - all around the world.

What is this place and what can it do? HotAirBalloonist.com is a built from scratch depository for all things balloon, not only for the balloonist's who are members but the public looking for balloon related services or products. This is a Facebook meets an Ebay meets Amazon.com meets Craig's List all rolled into one for the balloon world. This is a not so brief explanation of what HotAirBalloonist.com can do. First off There is an area on this site for every aspect of the balloon world. Pilots, Manufacturers, Dealers, Equipment for sale, Students, Clubs, DE’s, Insurance, Festivals, Crew, Ride Operators and more. There are different membership levels for everyone. Each membership has a set of permissions customized for that membership. The permissions are as follows. View a topic, Respond to a topic, Start a topic, Upload a file, Download a file. These 5 permissions have been set for each Category and Sub-Category on the site and for every membership. To give you a little feel for the scope of this. There are currently 35 main Categories, 250 Sub-Categories, 12 Modules, and 22 Member Groups. That is a bunch of settings and there are 5 permission settings for each set. How the site works When a visitor (anyone) comes to the site you are a guest. A guest can see about 50% of the site. A guest has no other permissions except to view the information on the site. This allows the general public to use the site for information and to contact someone in the balloon world for whatever their need is whether it be finding a festival, to learning to fly, to just taking a ride. The site is a window for the general public into the balloon world. The next level of membership is called the Registered Guest. This is where the guest has taken the time to give us a little information about who they are. This is a FREE membership for the first month and $1.75 a month after the 30 trial. . The "Registered Guest" is able to respond to a few topics in limited areas of the site. The Registered Guest can also see more areas of the site than a visitor (Guest). The Registered Guest can also post items for sale in the Equipment 4Sale category as well as in the Wanted Category for Available Pilots & Ground Crew. The Registered Guest Membership was designed for the Pilot or Ground Crew who is looking for work. If you are looking for work you are most likely watching the pennies, so we made it possible for you to go on the site and register as a guest then list yourself in the Wanted and Ground Crew categories. In hopes that when they do get a pilot or crew job they will come back and become a full Pilot or Crew member. As a Registered Guest you can also place a Wanted Topic in the Equipment 4Sale area so if you are looking for a specific piece of equipment you can let everyone know for FREE! Next is the Paid Memberships There are about 11 different types of paid memberships. Paid memberships have permissions to interact in areas that are associated with those types of memberships. REMEMBER A guest can see the topics a member posts but may not be able to reply, so always remember to include your contact information in every post or create a signature in your personal settings to automatically post that information at the bottom of each topic or reply you create. Get a Membership There are many areas inside the site. The navigation bar at the top allows you to go quickly to many of the more popular pages in the site. Here are some of the different areas inside the site and some of the things you can do in/or with these areas of the site. New Downloads At the top of the page on the main page "The Forums Page' there is a section called "New Downloads". This section displays the 25 of the most recently added Downloads. This is an easy way for you to see what has been posted recently. Many of the Downloads are free and some are for a fee. Members can download ALL files from HotAirBalloonist.com for free. The Free Downloads alone can pay for your membership. Forums Page The Forums page has all the different Categories of discussions. You will find over 30 different Categories and there can be many Sub-Categories inside them. For Example there is a Category for Equipment for sale. Inside that there are many Sub-Categories. Sub-Categories like baskets and burners and envelopes and so on. The topics page is where there are over 35 different categories about all sorts of different balloon related discussions. Best of all if you want to see a new category just send us an email and we will start a new one for you! Here is a link to a page that explains how the navigation of categories works. "Follow this feature" There are many many balloonists who are part of the "Reflector" email system. On HotAirBalloonist you can use the Follow this topic or Follow this Forum feature to do the same thing. Any topic or any forum you are interested in you can simply check the box at the top of the first entry. Once you have checked this box anytime someone adds a new topic or a new reply, you get an instant email notice with the actual comments that were posted in the forum or topic you are following. Better yet you can follow as much or as little as you want! Choose the items you want to hear about and if you get tired of a subject or you have found the answer you were looking for you just select UNFOLLOW and poof no more emails. Taylor your incoming email information in any manor you wish. Say on top of what you want without getting tons of emails about stuff you don't what to hear about. This feature has all the benefit of the reflector with YOU in the drivers seat! The HAB "Walkie Talkie" This forum can be found in the Hot Topics category on the topics page. All new members are encouraged to go to this forum and check the "Follow this Forum" button. This is the information hub of the website. Any member who starts a topic in the Walkie Talkie forum will trigger a system wide email! This means if you start a topic hundreds of members will get an email letting them know you have started a topic. If they have an answer or want to respond they can simply reply to your topic. If you start a topic in the Walkie Talkie forum don't forget to check the Follow this Topic button so you are notified if another member reply's to your topic. WHO READ THIS There is a very unique feature installed in the topics on the site. It is called "Who Read This?" The site keeps track of the members who have read your topic while they were logged in. This feature can be used in cases where you have posted something you want a specific set of people to read. If you have a committee and you send an email out to ten members you can see if they all read your topic. You can see the WHO READ THIS at the bottom of any topic on the site. Better yet if you mouse over a members name in the "Who Read This" area a pop up will open that tells you when the member read the topic. Current Events This page was designed to have two main sections. The first section is to showcase stories written by our members. It displays the 10 or 15 most current posted stories from our members. The next section on the page is for ballooning in the headlines. We have created a news feed, that scours the internet for any story about ballooning that has hit the headlines. If there is a news story (Good or bad) it will get posted here. There are also many other links down the right hand side of this page for more balloon related stuff. This is a great page to go and find out what is currently going on with ballooning and on the HAB Site. There is a link on the side bar that many overlook. The link says “View Other Media” This is a link to the videos page. Many pilots and crews my already have video up on YouTube and Vimeo and other video sites. On the Media page you can link your video onto HotAirBalloonist.com. No uploading over again just copy and paste the link and the site does the work! Go try that out! The Store The store is exactly that. An online shopping area where you can purchase items. As time goes by the store will grow and grow. The store is where you would go to begin a banner advertising campaign or purchase a membership or get a gift coupon to give your crew a free membership. There are Key Fobs and T-Shirts and Compass's and all sorts of stuff in the store and were adding more. There is no limit to the number of Categories we can have in the store and to the number of products we can list in those Categories. Recently we made an offer to several balloon festivals. We offered to list their left over balloon event T-Shirts for sale in our store at no cost to the event. Just another way they can get rid of their leftover shirts. Any member can have stuff listed in the store. If you produce something that other balloonists can use just let us know what the item is and what you want to sell it for and we will list it. 4 Sale Most likely the largest section on the site. This Category has more Sub-Categories than any other. It is designed for the person who is selling equipment, whether it is a dealer or an individual or a manufacturer. An Equipment Seller can post a topic all about their equipment including photos, Text, Links, Emails, Phone numbers and any information they want to have listed about their stuff. Now here is where it gets fun. Any member can ask questions about the equipment. Once an equipment seller has posted their topic about the equipment the other members can respond with questions about that equipment. So let’s just say that you posted an ad for a balloon for sale and you forgot to list what type of burner it has. Members will start to post replies asking about the burner. YOU can go back and EDIT your topic to include the information you forgot! Since this is your topic you can add, edit, change, or even DELETE the topic at any time! No waiting for someone else to change it for you!!!! O and remember anyone can view the topic! Even NON-Members “Guests” can see the equipment for sale topic. So even a balloon pilot from Minnesota who is not a member can see your balloon for sale! So when you create a topic to sell something EVERYONE gets to see it! Rides Here again a HUGE Category. We have scoured the web to try to find every REAL balloon ride operation in the United States. In this category the balloon ride operator can get a membership that will allow them to create their own advertisement about their operation. The Ride Operator Member can create a topic all about their balloon rides complete with photos, links, emails, phone numbers, and specials and just about anything they want to post. The best part is they also can change, add, edit or alter the topic any time. It is a mini advertisement for their business that everyone can see. So Guests, (the general public) who are looking for a balloon ride can find an operator in their state and make contact directly. If the ride operator gets only one booking from this it has paid for their membership for a YEAR! The Exchange. This is a fantastic area of the site. The Exchange was developed to be an electronic bulletin board for areas were there is a great deal of balloon activity. Members in an area can use the "Follow This" feature of the site to stay informed about ballooning related information in their flying area. The Exchange has 4 sub-forums inside each area. The Pilots Forum, Crew Forum, Passenger Exchange and Landowner Relations. These 4 areas are where the most communication happens. Members check the "Follow This" box in each of the sub-forums and then are notified by email when another member has posted a new topic. For example, You have two extra passengers for Saturday. You do not want to fly an entire balloon for just two people but someone else in your area may have two empty spots available. You post a topic that you need someone to fly two passengers for you and all the members in your area get an email about your topic! Instant communication to all the members in your area. Another example would be that you are short ground crew for Friday. Post a topic in the Crew Forum and all the crew members get an email from the system letting them know you are looking for crew. If a ground crew gets paid for crewing just once it will pay for their crew membership to the site for an entire year! The Exchange is super convenient for the pilots and for the crews. Landowner relations can be posted in one spot for your entire area and anyone can log on and review it at any time. Great to inform others about a problem area or for new launch and landing spots. The Exchange can also help keep problems from getting worse by letting all the members in your area know about a sensitive spot. The Exchange also keeps a record of all topics posted so you can go back and review the information at any time and new pilots and crews to the area can also learn from the posted topics of others in the area. This feature of the site is worth your entire years membership alone! The Exchange is not a public page. The Exchange can only be found on the Balloon Rides page and only seen when you are logged in. BREAD CRUMB. On every page of the site just under the main navigation bar is what we call a Bread Crumb Trail. This is a trail of the steps you have taken to get to the page you are on. Many times we want to take a step back or two. On many sites this requires the user to more or less start over at the main page. On HotAirBalloonist.com you can take just one step or two steps back just by using convenient links in the Bread Crumb trail. Pin me! This feature was created by the suggestion of a ride operator. We had a ride operator who said " I'll give you $100 if you don't list any other ride operations within 100 miles of me. Our response was that we could not do that since we are trying to create a resource that has ALL the balloonists listed on this site. But that idea floated around in my head for a few weeks and I came up with Pin Me! The way each forum works is by having topics in each forum. In the case of the Balloon Ride Operators forum the topics are the actual operators themselves. Each time a ride operator creates a new topic, the topic appears at the top of the list and moves all the other topics down a space. If someone wants their topic to remain at the top of the list they can go to the store and purchase the Pin me package. Then we Pin their topic at the top of the list. The pin me package can be used in other areas of the site as well, for example if you are selling a balloon and you want your ad to stay at the top so your balloon for sale is the first ad someone sees when visiting your category or forum. Pin Me is a first come first served package. The first person who purchases the Pin Me package gets to be on top! If more than one person in a forum or category purchased the pin me package they would be second on the list and so on. So if you think this is something you may consider then do it right away! Topics inside a Category or Sub-Category. The Topics on the site are started by our members. These are posts created by members about something they want to know about or to tell about their services or items for sale or just about anything a member wants to say. Inside each Topic you can include, hyperlinks, emails, photos, unlimited text, your contact information, mailing address and even create a poll. We can also create categories that the general public can not even see. Imagine Custom categories that you must be a logged in member to see. The possibilities are endless. If you are not logged in right now you can not see the Hot Topics Category but if you use your Facebook credentials or register as a Registered Guest you will see a category on the Topics Page called Hot Topics. This is an open topic that you can use right now to get an idea of what you can do on this site. Poll's Yes you can even create a poll. Have something you want to ask for someones opinion? Create a poll. Want to do a vote for Club President? Do a Poll. Want help choosing a new balloon name? Conduct a poll! As a member you can create any topics you want. Inside that topic you can also create a poll. Ask a question and then create up to five answers. A poll can have as many as 20 questions. You can imagine the dozens of great uses for this feature of the site. The Calendar Actually there is no limit to the calendars we can have on the site. We have several on the site right now. The cool part is that the calendars can be set with different permissions so we can choose who can see them. For example if you have a balloon club and you want only your club members to see YOUR calendar we can do that. If you want a calendar that only members can see but not the general public “we can do that”. We can also control who has permission to add, edit or delete items from the calendar! The Default calendar on the site is the Balloon Events Calendar and we have over 130 events listed on it right now. If you want to see an example of how the private calendar system works go to the site as a guest. (Not logged in) and then click on the drop down arrow of calendars. You will see several calendars but you will not see the BFA Board calendar. Now log in and go back to the calendar page and click on the drop down arrow and you will now see the BFA Board Calendar. We can control who sees the calendars as well as who can add and delete items from the calendars. The Member Map Ok, this was my favorite module on the site. Took me almost three weeks to install and get functioning and then another two weeks to get all the information on it.. The member map is a scalable map with marked locations of hundreds of balloon related items. From Festivals to Ride Operations to Repair Stations to DE’s to Balloon Clubs. There are over 700 pins on the map. You can zoom in on any part of the country and then click on a pin and a small window will open displaying the information about that pin. The pins are colored by item. A yellow pin is a balloon ride. A green pin is an event. Red pin is repair station and so on. So no matter what you are looking for you can find the nearest one to you anywhere in the US. A guest can find the nearest balloon ride operation. A student can find the nearest DE. A pilot can find nearby festivals or events or even a repair station. This module is not only cool but has great usefulness. Are you still with me? Bless your heart if you still are. Balloon Clubs On HotAirBalloonist.com we have the ability to create entire categories and forums customized for your club. We can create a category that is password protected so only your club members can gain access. Once inside your custom category you can use all of the other features of the site. Your club president can have a moderators membership allowing them access to the bulk mail feature of the site and you can even have club meetings in the chat room on the site. Many balloon clubs fail because running your own website is time consuming and costly. Needing to rely on a webmaster to make changes to the site is also a pain. On HotAirBalloonist.com you have complete and easy control over your space. If you are even a little bit curious about how a balloon club can be run withing the site give us a call and we will show you how. Gallery The photo and video galleries. Here members can share their photos. The favorite flight or event or just cool shots they have collected over the years. Split up into several categories and we will be adding more, the member can create their own gallery and then go back and make more or add more to their existing gallery. CLUBS The Clubs feature allows you to start your own club. The Club feature gives you all the same features of the main HAB site in your own site within a site. Clubs can have a topics area. Your club can have its own calendar. You club can have a download center where you can share files with other club members. Your club can have a blog area. Your club can have a photo gallery. ALL the areas in your club can be followed by your club members. This means that when your members join your club they can use the FOLLOW feature on all your club areas to be instantly informed about new items that have been added. For Example. If you members follow the calendar: each time a new calendar event is added each member is sent an email by the system. This way you know that all your members are notified instantly when you post a new event. This also works when any of your club members post an event on the calendar all the other members will be notified. The follow feature can be used in all areas of your club. When creating a new club you have several club types to choose from. A PUBLIC Club, A public club is an open club. Anyone can see the club and the contents of the club. Anyone can participate in the club without having to join the club. An Open Club, Everyone can see the club and the contents but only members can participate. Anyone can join. A CLOSED CLUB: Everyone can see the club and who's in it but. Only members can see the contents of the club and only members can participate in the club. Members must ask a club leader to join. A PRIVATE CLUB. Only a member can find the club and see its posts. Members must be invited by a club leader to join. Blogs Online web logs, here you can write a continuing story about your ballooning or any other item you feel is of interest. I should have done a blog about building this site and all the hassles I went thru to get it to work. You can tell the story about building your first balloon or tell the day by day story about going to the national championships or any item that takes time. It is a great way to tell your story and open to all members to use and everyone to view. Still more! Download section Here members can upload files to share. Let’s say you are a balloon festival, you can upload your pilot application or your vendor application or even the competition map for anyone to download. Say you have files you want to share about basket specifications or even balloon gore drawings, all these things can be uploaded for others to download at their leisure. I have even found it is a great way to load large files that you would not send via email. We can create as many categories for the download page as we want and upload as many files as you need. We have just added a new category in the Download section for FAA Forms. Currently you can download the PTS for private and commercial balloon students. You can download a bill of sale form and we are adding more all the time. Feel free to upload a file you think a fellow balloonist can use or may need. Paid Downloads You can now CHARGE money for a file you have that others could use. A tether contract, Check list, Photograph, Book, any electronic file can now be uploaded in the HotAirBalloonist.com download center and then be purchased by anyone! RIDE OPERATIONS You can sell your photos of your passengers in the Download section! Take a photo durring the flight then upload it for purchase by your passengers. Give them a link to your category and the passengers can purchase and download the photo with no effort from you. Name your own price for your photos. ATTENTION professional PHOTOGRAPHERS! Do you want to sell your photos? Did you know you can do that in our download section! Get an Equipment Sellers membership and we will create your own category in the Download section. Then you can create entire galleries from any event you photograph and sell the photos here online in the Download center. Call or email for more information. Members The member’s page is only viewable to members who are logged in. Here you can find our members. Look up and find out how to contact or more about a member of the site. With an easy access alphabetical location system you can find a member quickly even if we have thousands of members. Find out how to get a hold of an old friend you have not seen in years. Search the members and send a note to someone you have not seen in a while. Connect with friends. The member’s page allows you to find people fast and has links to their personal page where you can find their current contact information. Here is the scary part I have only scratched the surface of what this site can do. This is actually a quick walk around of the different areas of the site and a short overview of what they can do. The actual capabilities of this site are tenfold what I have touched on in this extremely long entry. Each member has a complete back room area where all of their personal stuff is available and MORE! TWO MORE FEATURES! First is the area called Hot Topics. Inside this category are a few Sub-Categories. One of them is called the "HAB Walkie Talkie" Each new member is automatically signed up to follow this Forum. Each time a member posts a new topic all the members will get an email! Then it is up to you to choose if you want to follow this new topic or not. The next great feature is the Video Tutorials. There is a Sub-Category inside the Download Center called Video Tutorials. This section is filled with video explanations of how to do many of the more popular tasks on the site. There is a full written explanation as well as a downloadable movie. These Video Tutorials can also be found in the Download Center of the site. This makes everyone an expert in minutes. If there is a task you would like to see a video made for please let us know and we will make one. Honestly bless your heart for reading this! Hopefully I have created a little excitement for you about the HUGE POTENTIAL and BENEFIT of this online balloon community. As I mentioned, I have tried to create something that will benefit all aspects of the balloon world. The site is huge and you honestly should go on and play around with it to get a feel for all the stuff it is capable of doing. If you can think of something that should be on the site let me know because I can create stuff real quick. Tell your friends to become a member and YOU as a member, log on and contribute, play, experiment then let me know how we make this even better! Help me create the best online resource the balloon world has ever seen. Question, Comments, Concerns, and Advice are more than welcome. Jeff

Thanks Drew, The abilities of this community are hard to grasp. This forum can do so much for so many. I wish I could walk every balloonist around the site personally and they would realize what a wonderful tool this can be for all of us. Jeff

I have been very lucky to have been to each of the hall of fame inductions. There are held during the Indianola National Balloon Classic each year. An event I have attended each of the last several years. I have been fortunate enough to be able to attend each of the hall of fame inductions. Many of us in the world of ballooning do not understand fully the rich heritage our sport has. Even people like myself who has been involved in ballooning since the mid 70's still do not fully understand the precious and valuable resources we hung around with every day. The Hall of Fame is a great way to highlight the pioneers and fantastic experiences of the early days of the ballooning world. I would encourage any balloonist who is traveling any where near Indianola Iowa to take the time out of their trip and go and visit the National Balloon Museum and especially the Ballooning Hall of fame.
